Preventive and Periodontal Disease
Healthy teeth and gums are the foundation to a beautiful smile. Without them, no amount of dental work can help. That’s why we believe in preventive, and non-surgical therapies to empower our patients with the ability to keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.
With the right care, it’s possible to keep your natural teeth for life. Our hygienists will show you how: through customized education plans, preventive cleanings, and assessments. We treat patients of all ages, including young children. Most of our healthy patients benefit from a “prophy” appointment every six months to avoid unwanted gum disease and tartar buildup.
Periodontal Treatments for Gum Disease
We begin every patient exam with a periodontal screening for gum disease. The levels of bone and attached gingiva are measured at six points on every tooth. Carefully monitoring these levels enables us to intervene when unhealthy pockets over 4mm deep are found. If disease is present, we’ll prescribe a series of deep cleanings and non-surgical supportive therapy.
Low radiation digital radiography allows us to pinpoint anatomical concerns that are not visible during a clinical exam. Some of the things we’re screening for are signs of bone loss, abscesses, decay, cysts/tumors, or other pathology. We also use x-rays to monitor the oral development of young children and as an aid during treatments like root canal or implant therapy.
VELScope Oral Cancer Screening
Advanced oral cancer screening technology enables us with the chance to pinpoint precancerous and pathological tissue as early as possible. In turn, this sets you up for more effective cancer therapy, due to intervening at the earliest stages of disease. Don’t be fooled…even non-smokers can suffer from this silent and deadly form of cancer.
Disorders of the TMJ can cause chronic pain, headaches, and worn down teeth. Aligning the bite with corrective orthodontics or restorative treatments helps to create a harmonious occlusal (biting) relationship that reduces strain associated with TMD.
Sleep Apnea Appliances
Do you or your sleep partner struggle with chronic snoring or signs of obstructive sleep apnea? If you’re CPAP intolerant, you may be a candidate for the TAP oral sleep appliance. It’s not uncommon to see significant results as early as the first night’s use. The TAP works by guiding your lower jaw forward and opening the soft tissues inside of the airway.
Headache Treatments and Bite Guards
Migraines and constant headaches can make it impossible to get through the day comfortably. Sometimes those headaches are due to overuse of the jaw muscles because of chronic bruxism (grinding and clenching.) A small NTI splint or bite guard helps to retrain your muscles in a way that prevents them from fully engaging, thereby relieving the tension. They also prevent you from wearing down your new crowns or fillings.
